Federal Website Seizures

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Attorney General may seize trademark or copyright infringing websites under the government’s Operation In Our Sites v. 2.0. program.  This action is authorized under federal law 18 U.S.C. §§ 981 and 2323, which specifically allows the Federal government to seize property involved in illegal activity.

Trademark counterfeiting and intellectual property infringement activity is illegal and is punishable by federal penalties including fines and up to felony criminal charges.

The Feds are expanding seizure power under under 18 U.S. C. §§ 981 and 2323 to include websites that are involved in this type of activity. Multiple websites seized by the Feds were replaced with this notice that visitors to the domains names encounter.
